Slavery in Ecuador

Slavery in Ecuador was a dramatic time period which has created a afro-Ecuadorian  culture  that takes up about 70% of Ecuador's population present day. It all started with The African Diaspora, which transported many African slaves to various locations like, Mexico, Ecuador,  Honduras, Brazil, Dominican Republic and more (citation). Were gonna focus on afro Ecuadorians and how it all happened. Most Afro Ecuadorians are the descendants of enslaved Africans who originally arrived in Ecuador from the early 16th century. In 153 the first enslaved Africans reached Ecuador in Quito when a slave ship heading to Peru was stranded off the Ecuadorian coast. Many slaves escaped to establish maroon settlements in  esmeraldas.

Resistence to slavery in Ecuador

When the Spanish arrived at Quito, The slaves fought back and escaped to create a maroon settlement in Ecuador called Esmeraldas. This place became a safe haven for run away slaves and became an icon for ecuador. Many slaves came to this place to thrive and live a happy life although it was hard to establish. the first African slaves  that were in ecuador had to fight back hard against the Spanish and gain power for them selfs which they did.   

 

African diaspora and how it affected Ecuador

 The African Diaspora is the movement of African slaves across the globe. Many slaves were transported to various different places but today were focusing on African diaspora in Ecuador.
